Downstate Overview
Everything south of the Chicago metro is "downstate" in Illinois parlance, and while the density does not match Chicago, every significant population center has licensed dispensary access. Downstate dispensaries often serve as the closest legal option for residents of neighboring states — particularly Indiana and Iowa — making them both local resources and border-town destinations.
Springfield
The state capital has strong dispensary coverage anchored by Ascend, which operates two Springfield locations, plus Maribis Springfield. As the seat of state government, Springfield was among the first downstate cities to embrace cannabis retail after the legislature passed legalization.
Champaign-Urbana
The University of Illinois corridor has become a social equity milestone for the state. Three dispensaries serve the area — Sunnyside Champaign (Cresco), nuEra Champaign, and The Dispensary. In July 2024, Champaign-Urbana celebrated a landmark moment: the opening of Illinois' 100th social equity dispensary, a significant marker in the state's effort to redress cannabis enforcement disparities.
Rockford
Sunnyside Rockford (Cresco) serves Illinois' fifth-largest city and the surrounding Winnebago County region. Rockford draws some Wisconsin border traffic, though the nearby Sunnyside South Beloit captures most of that cross-border demand with its location less than half a mile from the state line.
Peoria / Pekin
Central Illinois' largest metro area is served by nuEra Pekin and Trinity Peoria. Peoria sits at the crossroads of I-74 and Route 29, making it the regional hub for downstate cannabis access in the Illinois River Valley.
Bloomington-Normal
Beyond/Hello Bloomington serves the twin cities of Bloomington and Normal, home to Illinois State University and State Farm's corporate headquarters. Located along the I-55/I-74 interchange, Bloomington-Normal is a natural stopover for travelers between Chicago and Springfield.
Carbondale & Southern Illinois
Deep southern Illinois is served by Thrive dispensaries in Harrisburg and Anna, near Carbondale and the Southern Illinois University campus. These locations are the closest legal cannabis options for much of far southern Illinois and serve visitors from Kentucky and the southeastern corner of the state.
Metro East (St. Louis Border)
The Metro East region across from St. Louis includes Ascend Collinsville, Ascend Fairview Heights, and Beyond/Hello Sauget. This region has been dramatically affected by Missouri's legalization in February 2023 — see our border towns page for the full story on Collinsville's 38% tax revenue decline and Sauget's collapse from $55K to $23K per month.
The I-55 corridor from Chicago to Springfield passes through Bloomington-Normal, making it a natural rest stop with dispensary access. If you are driving downstate, Beyond/Hello Bloomington is right off the highway.
