What You Need

  • Valid government-issued photo ID proving you are 21 or older — driver's license, state ID, passport, or military ID from any U.S. state or country.
  • Cash or PIN-based debit card. Credit cards are not accepted at any Illinois dispensary due to federal banking restrictions. Most locations have on-site ATMs.
Non-Residents Get Half Limits

Illinois gives out-of-state visitors half the possession limits of residents: 15g flower (vs. 30g), 2.5g concentrate (vs. 5g), and 250mg THC edibles (vs. 500mg). The point-of-sale system tracks purchases and will block over-limit transactions automatically.

The Purchase Process

  1. Check in. Show your ID at the entrance. Staff verify your age and residency status before you enter the sales floor. Your ID determines whether you get resident or non-resident limits.
  2. Browse or pre-order. Most dispensaries post menus online through Dutchie, Leafly, or Weedmaps. Pre-ordering for pickup skips the wait — especially useful at busy Chicago locations.
  3. Consult a budtender. Illinois budtenders have been serving customers since January 2020 and tend to be knowledgeable about the state's extensive product lineup.
  4. Pay and go. Products go into sealed, child-resistant packaging. Do not open anything until you are in a private residence — public consumption is illegal.

Payment Methods

  • Cash — always accepted, still the most common payment method
  • PIN debit cards — widely accepted, typically processed as cashless ATM with a small fee ($1–$3.50)
  • ATMs on-site — most dispensaries have ATMs for customers who need cash
  • Credit cards — not accepted at any Illinois dispensary due to federal banking rules

No Delivery in Illinois

Illinois does not allow recreational cannabis delivery. All purchases must be made in person at a licensed dispensary. There are no consumption lounges either — except for Molly's Joint in Tilton, the state's first cannabis lounge at Parkway dispensary. You must consume in a private residence.

Online Pre-Ordering

Most Illinois dispensaries offer online ordering for in-store pickup through platforms like Dutchie, Leafly, and Weedmaps. Pre-ordering is strongly recommended for Chicago dispensaries on weekends and during tourist season.

Airport Amnesty Boxes

O'Hare and Midway airports have green metal amnesty boxes at every TSA checkpoint since January 2020. TSA does not actively search for cannabis, but if found during screening, they refer to local police. Chicago police follow state law — under-limit amounts result in amnesty box disposal, not arrest. Flying with cannabis remains federally illegal. CBD products with ≤0.3% THC are permitted. See our full airport guide.
