56 Qualifying Conditions

Illinois recognizes 56 specific qualifying conditions for its medical cannabis program — one of the most expansive lists in the nation. The list has grown steadily since the original 2013 law, with the most recent additions coming in 2025.

2025 Additions

Illinois added four new conditions in 2025, all related to women's health: endometriosis, ovarian cysts, uterine fibroids, and female orgasmic disorder. These additions reflect growing recognition of cannabis therapy for conditions that disproportionately affect women and have historically been undertreated.

The OAPP Pathway

Even if your condition is not on the 56-item list, the Opioid Alternative Pilot Program (OAPP) provides a broad pathway. Under OAPP, anyone with a condition for which an opioid has been prescribed — or could be prescribed — qualifies for medical cannabis. This effectively covers virtually any significant pain condition. See our program overview for OAPP details.

Condition Not on the List?

If your condition is not among the 56 named qualifiers, check the OAPP pathway. If your doctor has prescribed or could prescribe an opioid for your condition, you likely qualify through the Opioid Alternative Pilot Program. This covers chronic pain, arthritis, back injuries, and many other conditions not explicitly listed.
